Overview

The Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek is a thrilling journey through the far eastern region of Nepal, taking you around the base of Mt. Kanchenjunga (8,586 m) — the third-highest mountain in the world. This off-the-beaten-path trek offers raw Himalayan wilderness, untouched nature, and a rare cultural experience among Limbu, Rai, and Tibetan Buddhist communities. Unlike busier trails in the Annapurna or Everest regions, Kanchenjunga remains quiet and remote, making it ideal for seasoned trekkers looking for solitude and exploration.

The trek typically follows a loop route that visits both the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp (Pangpema) and South Base Camp (Oktang), with awe-inspiring views of the Kanchenjunga massif, Jannu Himal (locally known as “Mystery Peak”), and surrounding glaciers. The trail winds through dense forests, terraced fields, river valleys, and high alpine meadows, all while gradually gaining altitude. Due to its remote nature, this trek requires special permits, and you must travel with a registered guide and at least two trekkers in a group.

Itinerary

    • Your adventure begins with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur in eastern Nepal. After landing, you’ll drive for about five hours to reach the lush tea hills of Fikkal or Kanyam in Ilam. This area is famous for its sprawling tea gardens and cool climate. It’s a relaxing start to your trek, surrounded by gentle hills and greenery. You’ll stay overnight in a charming guesthouse amid the tranquil ambiance of eastern Nepal.

    • After breakfast, you’ll hit the road toward Taplejung, the starting point of the trek. The journey takes about five hours, winding through rural landscapes, hillside settlements, and river valleys. You’ll notice the terrain begin to shift as you ascend to the hills of Taplejung, a bustling little town surrounded by forested ridges. Here you’ll prepare for the trekking days ahead.

    • Your trek begins with a descent through terraced fields and local villages, before entering a narrow river gorge. You’ll follow the Tamor River, passing beautiful waterfalls and crossing suspension bridges. After about six hours of walking, you’ll arrive at Sekathum, a quiet village nestled by the Ghunsa Khola. The scenery becomes wilder and more remote from here onward.

    • Today’s trek takes you deeper into the Himalayan wilderness. You’ll climb gradually through lush forests of bamboo and rhododendron, crossing the Ghunsa River multiple times on wooden and metal bridges. The trail is challenging but incredibly scenic, eventually leading to Amjilosa, a small Tibetan-style village perched on a hillside.

    • The trail continues upward through thick forest, with the occasional sighting of rare birds or even red pandas. After several hours of steady hiking, you’ll reach Gyabla, a peaceful village surrounded by pine trees and cascading waterfalls. It’s a shorter day, offering time to relax and enjoy the mountain air.

    • Leaving Gyabla behind, you follow the trail past yak pastures and through scenic woodlands before entering the broader Ghunsa Valley. After crossing a final suspension bridge, you’ll arrive in Ghunsa, the largest and most vibrant village in the region. With its traditional stone houses and prayer flags fluttering in the wind, Ghunsa offers a deep glimpse into Tibetan culture.

    • To help your body adjust to the higher altitude, you’ll spend a rest day in Ghunsa. You can explore the village, visit the monastery, or take a short acclimatization hike to a nearby ridge. This is a great day to recharge while enjoying views of Jannu Himal and interacting with the local Sherpa community.

    • Today’s trail climbs higher as you move above the tree line. The landscape opens up to alpine views, glaciers, and massive rock walls. You’ll pass through landslide-prone areas and climb gradually along the river to reach Kambachen, a small settlement with panoramic views of towering peaks like Jannu and Kanchenjunga.

    • Another rest day is scheduled here to help with acclimatization. You can take a hike to a viewpoint or nearby glacier, with stunning sights of the north face of Jannu and other snow-capped mountains. It's a good opportunity to rest and prepare for the push to higher elevations.

    • The route continues through glacial valleys with incredible views of the Himalayas. You’ll walk along rocky trails and moraine ridges, with sparse vegetation and a sense of pure wilderness. After a few hours of steady trekking, you reach Lhonak, a remote and windy campsite located in an open field with 360-degree views of towering peaks.

    • This is one of the highlights of the trek. You’ll hike from Lhonak to Kanchenjunga North Base Camp, also known as Pangpema, which sits at around 5,143 meters. The route offers dramatic mountain scenery and panoramic views of the north face of Mt. Kanchenjunga. After spending some time at the base camp, you return to Lhonak for the night.

    • Today you’ll retrace your steps back down the valley to Ghunsa. The descent offers a different perspective of the stunning landscapes you passed on the way up. After a long but steady walk, you’ll arrive back in Ghunsa, where you can rest in the familiar comfort of the village lodges.

    • You now head toward the high mountain pass route that connects the north and south sections of the trek. The trail climbs steeply through alpine forests and eventually reaches Sele Le, a high camp surrounded by jagged ridgelines. The views back toward Jannu and the Kanchenjunga range are jaw-dropping.

    • Today you’ll cross the Sele La Pass, which offers spectacular views from the top. The climb is tough but rewarding, with wide open vistas of both valleys. After the pass, you descend to Cheram, a quiet village located in a high-altitude meadow. This is a long day of trekking, but one of the most beautiful.

    • From Cheram, you’ll take a scenic day hike to Kanchenjunga South Base Camp, passing through glaciers and yak pasturelands. You’ll reach Ramche, a high meadow camp near the icy walls of Kanchenjunga’s southern face. After soaking in the dramatic views, you’ll return to Cheram for the night.

    • The trail descends sharply today through dense rhododendron forests and river valleys. You’ll pass by quiet streams and small settlements before arriving at Torongding, a charming village surrounded by forests. The drop in elevation makes for a warmer and more comfortable night.

    • This is your final trekking day. You’ll descend through terraced farmland and small villages to Rani Pul, where the trail officially ends. From here, you’ll hop in a vehicle and drive back to Taplejung, where a hot shower and a comfortable bed await.

    • You’ll begin the return journey by road, driving from Taplejung to Bhadrapur, where you’ll catch a flight back to Kathmandu. Once in the city, you’ll return to your hotel and have time to relax, reflect on your adventure, or celebrate with your trekking team.
